STEM Grants for Schools 

We've collated a list of open science grants for schools - some specifically for STEM activities like science workshops in schools, others targeting social benefit in your local community. We'll update this regularly so you can trust that all grants listed here are active. Please let us know if you're successful in securing one of these STEM grants - or if there are others we should add.

Find science week funding and STEM grants for our sensational science shows for schools

Available across the UK:

  • What for: Events organised as part of British Science Week​

  • Who: State schools across the UK with 30% pupil premium, 30% ethnic minority backgrounds, or in remote rural locations 

  • How much: £400 Kick Start Grant for your school; or
    £600 Community Grants for activities involving students and the local community

  • When: Applications typically open October-November

  • What for: To stimulate interest and enable involvement in mathematics from KS1 up

  • Who: Anyone based in the UK. Prioritise activities with limited scope for alternative sources of funding

  • How much: Grants of £600-£800

  • When: Quarterly applications - Jan/Apr/Aug/Nov

  • What for: Communicating the science of animal behaviour to young people and/or the public

  • Who: Individuals and organisations, including schools, museums, libraries and community groups

  • How much: Grants of up to £2000

  • When: Proposals reviewed 1st Apr & Oct

  • What for: Support projects or workshops that aim to develop creative and artistic interests and skills in young people.

  • Who: Anyone based in the UK, although West Midlands preferred.
    Prioritise charitable or not-for-profit organisations

  • How much: Grants are typically c£500

  • When: Applications in Jan/May/Sep for review the next month

Philip Bates Trust
  • What for: Supports the education and development of children and young people, particularly projects that enhance self-confidence, team working skills and educational horizons; encouraging creativity, persistence, individuality and aspirations and willingness to take on leadership roles

  • Who: Mostly schools, colleges, cultural organisations like drama and music clubs, sports organisations and community clubs

  • How much: Grants of up to £5000

  • When: Rolling applications, at least 3 months before an event

  • Where: Bedfordshire

  • What for: Education and social welfare including after school workshops and STEM projects for children, youth and disability groups

  • Who: Registered charities

  • How much: Grants of £1000-10,000 (small grants of up to £4000)

  • When: Small grants reviewed monthly, larger grants quarterly - Feb/Apr/Jul/Oct

  • Where: Northumberland - parishes of Brinkburn & Hesleyhurst; Longhorsley; Netherwitton; Nunnykirk; Rothley & Hollinghill

  • What for: Advancing education, citizenship, culture or science (amongst others)

  • Who: Schools and constituted voluntary and community groups

  • How much: Grants of £250 to £5000

  • When: Applications in Feb/May/Aug/Nov, decision a month later

  • Where: Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

  • What for: Various, incl education and skills, supporting mental wellbeing, strengthening culture and community life

  • Who: Charities and social enterprises, where the grant will support charitable purposes

  • How much: Typically around £5000

  • When: Various

  • Where: Yorkshire

  • What for: Anything at the absolute discretion of the trustees

  • Who: Registered charities including schools

  • How much: Not stated

  • When: Quarterly - last Mon ofJan/Apr/Jul/Oct, decisions 2 months later

  • Where: Somerset - communities affected by construction of HPC

  • What for: Improving community wellbeing and quality of life

  • Who: Charities, not-for-profits, and social enterprises that meet minimum standards for governance, finances and safeguarding

  • How much: Grants of £250 to £10,000 for one year, or up to £20,000 over three years

  • When: Rolling applications – reviewed every 2 months

  • Where: Communities in England and Wales impacted by NGET construction work or maintenance activities - see projects here

  • What for: Social benefits including STEM skills education projects, improving diversity and inclusion, educational attainment (confidence and self-esteem in young people), community health and wellbeing

  • Who: Registered charities, social enterprises and non-profit organisations

  • How much: Grants of up to £10,000/£20,000

  • When: Quarterly applications - Apr/Jul/Oct/Jan, decision in 2 months

  • Where: Communities near one of 30 Persimmon Homes offices across the UK - see locations here

  • What for: Aim to make a real difference to people’s lives by supporting local charities and good causes

  • Who: Charities or not-for-profits

  • How much: Grants of up to £1000 from a 250 word application form

  • When: Funds allocated monthly

Young Futures Fund

  • Where: Communities across the UK near an Asda superstore

  • What for: Improving mental health and wellbeing for teens (13-18) 

  • Who: School PTAs, youth clubs and uniformed groups with own bank account, governing documents and annual income <£250k

  • How much: Grants of £500 to £1000

  • When: Annual – typically open Feb/March for activities in Autumn
